URGENT - TO THE ATTENTION OF THE PRIME MINISTER HON. KEVIN RUDD
The Hon Kevin Rudd MP
Prime Minister of Australia
Parliament House
Canberra ACT 2600
Dear Prime Minister,
A plea to stop the imminent bloodbath of Tamils.
Your silence is making the Australian Tamil community, including the three who are on hunger strike, extremely nervous and desperate.
On the 11th of April three young members of the Tamil diaspora started a hunger strike, without food, water and any medical aid to bring the plight of the Tamil people to your attention and with a plea to use your diplomatic powers to push the Government of Sri Lanka to bring about a permanent ceasefire and to allow aid immediately. They are refusing to give up the fast citing the fact that despite repeated pleas by the Tamils, Australia's inaction is allowing Sri Lankan government to continue the genocide of innocent Tamil civilians.
With stripping Norway of its peace broker role, the Sri Lankan government has sent a clear message of closing the door for negotiations and pursuing the genocide of Tamils. This is exactly what the Tamils have been accusing the government of Sri Lanka of, for the past several years.
As you are aware the Humanitarian Catastrophe that has unfolded in Northern Sri Lanka is showing signs of reaching its zenith very soon. As an Australian, I am deeply disturbed by the fact that Australian government has restricted itself to mere expression of concerns rather than taking solid steps towards concrete serious actions.
The feeling of horror at the imminent bloodbath and the frustration due to the lack of decisive action by the international community to stop this, is affecting the entire Tamil community. Your continued silence towards the repeated pleas is also adding a sense of desperation. Emotions are running riot and as a result some members are taking extreme measures to highlight the plight of the Tamil civilians to you, outside of your residence.
Prime Minister, your government upholds strong egalitarian and humanitarian values. Australia should change its perception and see the Tamil struggle as a freedom struggle. Laying down of arms has to be by both sides in a war, which effectively is a complete and permanent ceasefire. That is what Australia should press for.
