Email campaign - UN must release civilian casualty estimate in Sri Lanka War
Dear President Obama, Prime minister Gordon Brown, Ms. Pillay, Mr. Nambiar and Mr. Ban Ki-Moon,
UN must release the casualty figures in Sri Lanka. Tamil sources are estimating the number of civilians killed as more than 30,000 in the year 2009 alone.
The resolution passed on the 11th session of the Human Rights Council is a disgrace. It ridicules the UN system and sets dangerous precedence where perpetrators of war crimes can get away with political manoeuvring.
We would like to salute Ms. Navi Pillay for strongly voicing her concerns for the victims of war. We would like to salute the countries who stood up for human rights. Their continued efforts are important to uphold human rights and world peace.
The resolution, congratulating Sri Lanka's victory while 20,000 Tamil civilian bodies lay buried in the Vanni region and while 300,000 languish in razor wire fenced military operated camps with families separated and basic rights denied, is a threat to world peace and humanity.
It is a joke that mocks at all good decent people.
The Defenders of Human Rights and the Democratic nations of the world should not relent in the face of this cruel mockery of fundamental values and must call for further inquiries into the war conduct of both parties in Sri Lanka.
The UN has thus far failed
1)To stop the genocide in which at least 20,000 Tamil men, women and children have been massacred in the final days of fighting in May 2009.
2)To bring the perpetrators of war crimes to justice.
Both failures come despite repeated warnings by the Tamil Diaspora.
The Tamil Diaspora and all decent people who believe in sanctity of Human Rights, hold Mr. Ban Ki Moon and Mr. Nambiar accountable for the disgraceful resolution since they made the situation worse by praising a Government that was and is still refusing full UN, ICRC access to all camps.
Please act today to bring justice for the innocent victims of war and their families.
Justice delayed is Justice denied.
Yours truly,
